Job Summary:

State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University (UMU) seeks an internationally recognized expert in tick-borne diseases to apply for an Associate or Full Professor of Empire Innovation position (EIP) as part of the New York State Empire Innovation Scholar Program. The program and position aim to expand the ranks of world-class faculty within the SUNY system. EIP positions are highly prized and very competitive; as such, EIP faculty enjoy unique distinction within the SUNY system and are largely free of teaching responsibilities to accelerate their research. The position offers a highly competitive hard-money state-line salaries and a generous start-up package supplemented by contributions from the New York State Empire Innovation fund.  

The successful candidate will join a growing team of collaborative and interdisciplinary infectious disease researchers within the newly established SUNY Center for vector-borne diseases, organizationally housed within the UMU Institute for Global Health and Translational Sciences (IGHTS). The faculty member will have access to the unique, integrated basic-clinical science research environment at IGHTS ( and the robust research core facilities, including the newly built state-of-the-art BSL-3 insectary and vivarium (BSL-3, ABSL-3, and ACL-3).

Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should have an established program focused on the basic and/or translational research on tick-borne diseases, currently funded through competitive extramural sources that are R01 or R01-equivalent. The faculty is expected to work closely with faculty and staff throughout the Upstate and other SUNY campuses to develop critical mass in the SUNY Center for vector-borne diseases and work collaboratively with the Center Director to establish an internationally recognized research center.
