Job Summary:

Participates in Medication Assistance Program Activities: Create and maintain database of all pharmaceutical manufacturers indigent drug programs. Complete necessary paperwork on pharmaceutical company sponsored assistance programs. Obtain medications for use by inpatients and coordinate the provision of these medications with the health care providers. Obtain medications for use by outpatients, home care patients and mail order patients and coordinate the provisions of these medications with the health care providers. Work with appropriate pharmacy personnel to provide "bridge" supplies of medications for outpatients until manufacturers programs are initiated. Assure proper receipt and distribution of medications received from manufacturers. Follow up on manufacturer denials to fund. Explore other appropriate means to provide medications to indigent patients; ie. vouchers, outside funding, etc. Coordinate activities with research programs and IDS to provide medications to indigent patients on drug studies. Assure medications provided through indigent care program are ordered, labeled, documented and distributed per policy and procedures approved by the pharmacy department and meet legal requirements of drug use process.


Coordinate Medication Assistance Program Activities with Hospital and Clinics: Assure proper assessment of financial status per communication with fiscal and admissions personnel. Assure indigent medication program procedures are consistent with hospital policies. This position is the liaison to fiscal affairs on issues related to medication indigent care service. Provide data on cost/benefits of program through monthly reports provided to pharmacy administration in format that can be shared with fiscal affairs and hospital administration. Serve as point person on questions about the program from caregivers, manufacturers and fiscal affairs personnel.

Quality improvement: Monitor compliance with medication assistance program services policies and procedures. Audit accuracy of billing of patients enrolled in program. Assure patients receive needed medications on a timely basis.

Pharmacy Reimbursement Systems: Act as backup for reimbursement problems and assessments for pharmacy medication mail order program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associates Degree in a science or health related field and two years of pharmacy technician experience in a pharmacy and National Pharmacy Technician Certification; NYS Licensed LPN with three years of post-licensure experience to include medical billing office experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent written/oral communication, interpersonal, organizational, conflict resolution, and computer skills required.

*Candidates with an Associates two years of qualifying experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, without the PTCB certification may be considered for a Temporary Appointment; and will be required to fully meet the minimum qualifications within eighteen months of their Temporary Appointment date.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with coordinating large projects preferred. Experience and knowledge of various types of insurances and their allowable benefits, drug coverage and regulations preferred.
