Job Summary: This Colo-rectal Surgeon candidate will be specializing in management of surgical disease of the colon and rectum. This includes surgical management of malignancy, inflammatory disease, infection, and a multitude of acquired disorders. While simple removal and reconnection of the colon falls into the competency list of a general surgeon, more complex procedures involving removal of the entire colon and rectum, removal of a very distal portion of the sigmoid colon, removal of the rectum and creation of pouched and specialty colonic reconstruction, require extra training which would be provided by a colorectal surgery fellowship (1-2 years). Common diseases of the anal area and distal rectum (i.e. hemorrhoids, fistula, and sinus tracts) are also felt to be best managed by a trained colo-rectal surgeon.
