Job Summary:

The mission of SUNY Upstate Medical University is to improve the health of the communities we serve through education, biomedical research, and health care.  Beyond our downtown campus, we provide care through our clinics and offices across the greater Syracuse area. 

In support of our ongoing growth, the Family Birth Center at the Upstate Community Campus is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Advanced Practice Provider to care for Neonates at the time of birth. 

Our APPs are integral team members in supporting low risk and complicated deliveries. In addition to 21 postpartum couplet rooms, there is a 6 bed Level I Nursery for newborns requiring additional short-term medical care and support.   APPs provide 24-hour availability of neonatal resuscitation.  Additional responsibilities include care for babies in the extra care nursery, NRP education and responding to all baby emergencies as they arise.  APPs will promote and support all initiatives for Baby Friendly Designation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and perform various procedures including, but not limited to paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar punctures, ultrasound guided IV’s, and central lines.
  • Providing expert level clinical care & coordination of care via a full range of services that will improve quality of patient care assessing & evaluating patients, ordering appropriate laboratory testing & diagnostic studies, arranging for referrals, testing, consultation & therapeutic services.
  • Maintaining outstanding relationships with families, referring physicians & all members of the health care team.

As an APP, you will be an integral member of the healthcare team, demonstrating professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to Upstate’s mission, vision, and values, while adhering to all institutional policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (or graduated from an accredited PA program) or will be eligible by time of appointment.
  • NYS Licensed/Registered NP or PA.
  • Current National Certification consistent to the clinical practice. 
  • NYS licensed/registered NP or PA required. Have a NPI number and be Medicare enrolled with a Medicare Identification Number (or PTAN) (or eligible for Medicare Enrollment within 6 months of hire.
  • CPR-BLS Certification required at the time of appointment.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment and credentialing clearances. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Neonatal experience preferred

Work Days:

12 hour shifts, combination Days and Nights, 7 days per week
