Job Summary:
The Principal Laboratory Animal Caretaker will be responsible for serving as a liaison between Senior Laboratory Animal Caretakers, PI’s and managers. Will train, schedule and observe the work of staff (Laboratory Animal Caretakers and Sr Laboratory Animal Caretakers) to ensure that the tasks are carried out and the proper procedures are followed. This position will perform animal husbandry duties daily. Handle, restrain, and determine the sex of common laboratory animals. Incumbents must be knowledgeable of federal, state and local regulations and guidelines pertaining to laboratory animals and be able to recognize and report areas of noncompliance.
Will purchase office supplies as well as laboratory animals and supplies. In addition, they will process invoices to Accounts Payable and receipts of merchandise to Receiving. They will coordinate incoming animal orders with Purchasing and DLAR Supervisors and make cage cards (file maker pro) and create signs/forms as needed. They will determine weekly animal per diem charges and PI's services/room/drug charges and bill the researchers monthly. In addition, they will be responsible for the maintenance and updating of the researcher's grant/dept accounts for recharge which may require non-standard billing for animal charges when necessary. They will process travel requests. and reimbursements. This position is responsible for answering phones and office walk-ins and will maintain all DLAR files and maintain the office supply room and current inventory. Will assist the DLAR Director by supplying pertinent information for cost analysis and data record keeping. Handle, restrain, and determine the sex of common laboratory animals. Customer support is an important aspect of this position and follow-up and trouble-shooting problems are essential. Must be able to perform heavy lifting and transporting of heavy items. This position requires attention to detail and excellent communication and organizational skills. Should be familiar with word and excel and experience with data bases is important. Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver's license.
Minimum Qualifications:
New York State Department of Civil Service Eligible List or eligible for transfer.
Promotional:
Must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had one year of permanent competitive, non-competitive or 55B/C service as a Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker.
OR
Two years of full-time service as a laboratory animal caretaker in a research facility including but not limited to hospitals, universities, institutions, or laboratories
OR
two years of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting and one year of full-time service as a laboratory animal caretaker in a research facility including but not limited to hospitals, universities, institutions, or laboratories.
OR
Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or higher by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science and one year of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting and one year of full-time service as a laboratory animal caretaker in a research facility including but not limited to hospitals, universities, institutions, or laboratories.
Preferred Qualifications:
AALAS ALAT preferred.
Work Days:
Schedule based on a 40 hour work week. Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm. Located in Weiskotten Hall.
