Job Summary:

The Viczian Lab investigates the growth and response of blood vessels in the eye to genetic alterations (https://viczianlab.godaddysites.com/). Our mission is to identify molecules and pathways whose alterations lead to blindness, with the aim of developing therapeutic targets to counteract this disease. We are seeking a self-motivated Research Support Specialist to join our team.

The successful candidate will receive training to perform various experimental tasks, including maintaining the mouse colony, organizing the lab, and utilizing molecular biological techniques, such as DNA isolation, PCR and gel electrophoresis. Responsibilities will include setting up breeding pairs, collecting tissue samples, and identifying mice for experimental analysis. Additionally, the position may involve learning techniques such as cryostat sectioning, immunostaining, microscopy/imaging, and cell counting for cellular analysis. The candidate will be expected to take meticulous notes and report their findings to the Principal Investigator (PI) weekly. They will also attend weekly department-wide meetings with the Center for Vision Research, a renowned group of exceptional scientists. Our lab is part of a collegial department-wide team where collaboration and sharing each other's successes are appreciated.

The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and enjoys working independently within a collaborative environment. Strong organizational and critical thinking skills are essential. A positive attitude and enthusiasm for science will be highly valued. As a member of the Center for Vision Research, the candidate will have opportunities for professional development, including participating in the Visiting Lecture Series, exposure to research in other vision labs, and potential authorship on papers reflecting their experimental and intellectual contributions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree in Biology, Neuroscience or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with mice preferred, but not required.

Work Days:

Monday - Friday; 8:00 - 5:00; Some evening or weekend hours may be required depending on experiments
