Job Summary:

Standardized Patients (SPs) at Upstate Medical University’s Syracuse Campus are individuals from the community who are paid to help train future healthcare providers. No medical background is needed. SPs are trained to accurately portray patients by following a case script, answering questions, and allowing students to perform basic, non-invasive physical exams while wearing a hospital gown over undergarments.

SPs support student learning by providing verbal and written feedback, completing computerized checklists, and participating in video-recorded sessions used only for educational purposes. Training is provided to ensure SPs feel prepared and confident in each scenario.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years old and authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Live in the Syracuse, NY area and have reliable transportation
  • Able to read, write, and speak English clearly
  • Basic computer and email proficiency
  • Comfortable being examined, videotaped (educational use only), and giving feedback
  • Able to memorize and realistically portray assigned patient cases
  • Willing to accept coaching and remain in character during simulations
  • Maintain strict confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in acting, education, or customer service is a plus

Work Days:

Monday - Friday Days (4-6 hour shifts)
