Job Summary:

The Artificial Intelligence Engineer designs, develops, evaluates, and supports artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions across Upstate Academic Medical Center. This position translates clinical, operational, academic, and administrative needs into practical technical solutions, including natural language processing applications, generative AI, and machine learning tools.

The Artificial Intelligence Engineer collaborates with subject matter experts, data teams, cloud and infrastructure teams, and organizational leadership throughout the AI solution lifecycle, from use-case definition and technical feasibility assessment through development, validation, implementation, and monitoring. The position also evaluates externally developed AI technologies for safety and suitability at Upstate.

This role works closely with IMTs AI Governance Lead and other appropriate stakeholders to ensure that AI solutions are transparent, secure, appropriately validated, and implemented in alignment with Upstates mission, vision, values, policies, and applicable laws and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering, statistics, mathematics, information systems, or another technical or data-driven field. 5+ years of relevant experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, software development, advanced analytics, or a related field. 2+ years programming experience in Python or C/C++/C# required.

Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and evaluating artificial intelligence solutions.

Proficiency in Python or another programming language commonly used for AI, machine learning, data analysis, or software development.

Experience with natural language processing, machine learning techniques, model validation, and performance evaluation.

Experience working with structured and unstructured data using data-processing and analytical libraries or platforms.

Understanding of software-development practices, including source control, code documentation, testing, dependency management, and development across multiple environments.

Ability to investigate technical problems, evaluate alternative approaches, and develop practical solutions involving data, models, applications, and system integrations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering, statistics, mathematics, informatics, or a related field.

Experience with Microsoft Azure suite of AI Tools, Microsoft Fabric, Power Platform, Copilot Studio, Azure DevOps or comparable technologies.

Prior work with healthcare data, including clinical, operational, claims, electronic health record, or healthcare administrative data.

Familiarity with healthcare privacy, security, regulatory, and governance requirements, including appropriate handling of protected health information.

Experience integrating technical solutions into established clinical, operational, academic, or administrative workflows.

Willingness to learn Python programming language if not already proficient.
