Job Summary:

A vital and integral part of the trauma team, the Pediatric Trauma Registrar will be responsible for the collection and analysis of data from the patient's medical record as well as the high-quality, detailed abstraction of this data into the trauma registry. Patients meeting National Trauma Data Standard (NTDS), New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH), and internal program inclusion criteria will be identified daily and entered. The Pediatric Trauma Registrar will work collaboratively with the other members of the trauma team to maintain a concurrent registry by ensuring timely data entry as well as closing 80% of charts within 60 days of patient discharge. Additionally, the registrar will generate reports as needed by the department, hospital, and American College of Surgeons (ACS) to be used to assess patient outcomes as well as to generate research studies. The Pediatric Trauma Registrar is also responsible for downloading data for submission to the ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) and the NYS DOH for inclusion in the New York State Trauma Registry. Reporting to the Trauma Program Manager (TPM), this position will also work closely with other Trauma Registrars, the Pediatric Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator, the Pediatric Trauma Injury Prevention Education and Outreach Coordinator, the Pediatric Trauma Medical Director (TMD), the Department of Pediatric Surgery, the Department of Nursing, the Pediatric Emergency Department, inpatient pediatric units, and the Pediatric Trauma team liaisons.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in Nursing, Health Information Management, Health Information Technology, Medical Informatics, or related field AND a minimum of 3 years of related experience OR an equivalent combination of education/certification and experience required. Must have previously attended or attend the following courses within 12 months of hire: (1) the American Trauma Society's Trauma Registrar Course or equivalent provided by a state trauma program (2) the Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine's Injury Scaling Course and (3) trauma-specific ICD-10 Coding training. Must meet and maintain continuing education requirements as required by both NYS DOH and the American College of Surgeons or another verification designee. Ability to learn electronic medical record and trauma registry software. Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team. Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks independently.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous healthcare, medical records, data management, or trauma-related experience preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, preferred. Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialists (CAISS), Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) preferred. Image Trend Patient Registry, EPIC experience preferred.
