Job Summary:

Will report to the Plant Utilities Engineer 1 or 2. Performs a variety of routine unskilled& semi-skilled manual tasks in the operation, maintenance and repairs of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and control systems while learning the HVAC trade.

Duties include but are not limited to: Check A/C equipment for leaks and cleanliness, change filters; clean steam traps and strainers; apply labels and stencils; start pumps and air handling equipment; perform preventative maintenance per Task Codes on HVAC equipment; adjust belt tension and replace belts; remove/replace/adjust pulleys and bearings; paint plenums and mechanical systems/rooms; pick up parts from vendors; repair heating convector dampers; respond to alarm and trouble calls; reset fire alarms. Use of assorted power hand tools, equipment materials, reading and interpreting gages and meters, shop equipment and measuring and testing instruments appropriate to the craft area to which assigned.

Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Must demonstrate the ability to adhere to safety standards. Will need to be able to read, write, speak and perform basic math. Will also be required to climb and work on ladders and scaffolds; bend, stoop, stretch and stand for long periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds) As assigned, ability to operate motor vehicles and power-driven equipment. May be required to use a computer to operate building management and fire alarm functions. At time of appointment, person will be fit tested for a mask respirator. Person must be free of facial hair of beard that may interfere with the fit or seal of a mask respirator. Such a mask must be worn in order to comply with State & Federal safety health codes. Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be physically able to perform moderate to heavy labor.
