Job Summary:

The Authorization Specialist/OR Scheduler Floater is an individual who can enhance the clerical scheduling functions of General Surgery. This individual takes responsibility for assisting the OR surgical schedulers in an important responsibility.  The main focus of this position is to obtain authorization for surgical cases being scheduled at University Hospital and outside facilities within a proper allocated time frame.  The position will act as back-up as well to obtaining authorization for medical imaging on a prn basis.  This position also includes coverage to OR surgical schedulers who are out and assist surgeons with placing inpatient cases on the surgical schedule. 

"Answer the telephone, take accurate messages, transferring calls to appropriate staff or handle certain calls that are appropriate.

"Back-up to incoming USPS delivery and delegating mail appropriately. 

"Responsible for accurate record keeping of status of obtaining authorizations to multiple surgical schedulers for multiple services.

"Works in conjunction with Billing Personnel and Upstate Pre-Services Department to ensure procedures ordered are reflective of the specifications of patient's insurance company and the appropriate referrals or authorizations have been obtained prior to the services being rendered and documents this.

"Responsible for obtaining prior authorization for each surgical case scheduled in the multiple OR locations for multiple services. 

"Constant communication with surgical schedulers on status updates of authorizations either via email, EPIC, or verbally.   

"Works in communication with Business Office/Periopad in supplying authorization information for surgical cases upon request.

"Able to work under deadlines.

"Act as back-up to obtaining authorization for related surgical services such as medical imaging, biopsies, etc. on a prn basis. 

"Responsible for scheduling Inpatient Surgery requests while OR Scheduler is out. 

"Acts as back-up/coverage to OR Surgery Schedulers in multiple services. 

"Maintain provider schedules to correlate urgent, inpatient surgeries scheduled. 

 

Computer Systems used:

EPIC, Excel, Outlook, Word, Amion

Minimum Qualifications:

Associates Degree or pertinent college level courses and two years of progressively responsible clerical experience in a medical setting. Will consider equivalent combination of education and experience.

Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
