Job Summary:

The Nurse Lactation Consultant provides professional nursing care to patients/families and the community by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation processes. The certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is an expert in the management of the breast-feeding mother-baby dyad. The consultant is a coach, consultant, teacher, and lactation expert. As a consultant, she/he works collaboratively with the Birthing Center, Newborn nurseries, Pediatrics, OB, and Nursing care teams to develop feeding plans for newborns. She/he makes clinical assessments and uses current lactation theories and research to develop evidence-based feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting the physician and patient/family breastfeeding goals. Acts as a consultant at the bedside, nurse educator, teacher, and care coordinator. The Lactation Nurse Consultant exemplifies the Upstate mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Upstate policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

NYS licensed RN (or eligible), Associates in Nursing (or equivalent) and four years satisfactory post-licensure experience or a Bachelors in Nursing (or equivalent) and two years satisfactory post-licensure experience required. International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Breastfeeding Specialist Certificate, or Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) certification is required. If Breastfeeding Specialist Certificate, IBCLC certification is required within one year of appointment. Excellent written/oral communication and organizational skills required. CPR-BLS certification is required by the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

B.S.N. and recent lactation experience preferred.  

Work Days:

Nights to include weekends on a rotational basis, 50% position
